Hlavná postava nového GTA nieje potvrdená. Z traileru môžme vyčítať 2 postavy z predošlých dielov GTA.

Za CJ-a ste mohli hrať v GTA:San Andreas. Začínali ste ako chudobný a postupom hry ste sa vypracovali na "boháča". V GTA IV existuje plagát, na ktorom môžme uvidieť CJ-a ako bohatého muža. GTA:SA sa odohráva v roku 1992 a tak keby sa CJ objavil v GTA V, bol by starší. V trailery sme mali možnosť vidieť jemu podobú postavu ako uteká pred policajtmi a je pomerne chudobne oblečená. Možnože hlavná postava bude práve CJ.
Tommy Vercetti
Tommy, hlavná postava GTA: Vice City sa vrátila do GTA V. Samozrejme, Vice City sa odohráva v 80 rokoch, takže Tommy je výrazne starší. Usadil sa v Los Santos aby prestal s kriminálnym životom, má deti, lenže tie žijú s matkou v Liberty City. No ako býva zvykom, všetko sa skomplikuje a dočkáme sa akcie. Tommy je vážny kandidát na hlavnú postavu!
Hra za viac postáv
Podľa jednej z informácií, ktorá sa objavila po vydaní traileru je že hlavný hrdina je 50 ročný beloch, no iná informácie hovorí že budeme hrať za 30 ročného afroameričana. Z toho vyplýva možnosť hrania za viac postáv počas hry. Alebo si na začiatku hry budeme môcť vybrať postavu, čo ovplivní aj príbeh a deje okolo.
Iná / vlastná postava
Rockstars Games radi tají do poslednej chvíle a je tu párpercentná šanca že nám pripravili novú postavu. Tommy a CJ budú len vedľajšie postavy pre ktoré budete plniť misie.
Niektorý hráči veria, že si budete môcť vytvoriť vlastnú postavu (podobne ako v hre Saints Row) ale to by znamenalo že príbeh by bol príliš univerzálny.
